A breathtaking haven in Rwanda, is renowned for its mountain gorilla population and stunning volcanic landscapes. This park offers a unique and unforgettable wildlife experience, showcasing the beauty and biodiversity of the Virunga Mountains.
Volcanoes National Park encompasses 160 square kilometers and is part of the larger Virunga Massif, a chain of eight volcanoes spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park’s dramatic landscape is characterized by steep slopes, lush rainforest, and volcanic peaks, including Mount Karisimbi (the highest), Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo.
The park’s most famous residents are the endangered mountain gorillas, made famous by the pioneering work of Dian Fossey. Gorilla trekking is the park’s main attraction, offering visitors a unique and humbling opportunity to spend an hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. The experience involves hiking through the dense forest with experienced trackers and guides, who locate the gorilla families.
Besides gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is also home to other primates, including the playful golden monkeys, which are also a popular tracking activity. The park’s diverse birdlife makes it a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 recorded species. Other wildlife found in the park includes forest elephants, bushbucks, and various small mammals.
Visitors can engage in several activities within the park, including guided hikes to the summit of Mount Bisoke, where a beautiful crater lake awaits, and a visit to the Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey. A trek to Dian Fossey’s grave, located near the research center, is a poignant experience for those interested in her conservation legacy. The park’s close proximity to Musanze town provides easy access to accommodations and other amenities.
