More about this Park

Established in 1925, Virunga is Africa’s oldest national park and spans a remarkable range of altitudes and habitats. This diversity is reflected in its exceptional biodiversity, making it a crucial conservation area. The park’s landscape is dominated by the Virunga Mountains, a chain of active and dormant volcanoes, including the iconic Mount Nyiragongo with its world-famous lava lake. These volcanic landscapes contrast sharply with the park’s lush rainforests, savannahs, and wetlands, creating a mosaic of ecosystems that support a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Virunga is renowned for its endangered mountain gorillas, offering visitors the unique opportunity to trek through the dense forest and observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. This is a truly unforgettable experience, providing a rare glimpse into the lives of these incredible primates. Alongside gorillas, the park is also home to chimpanzees, another endangered primate species, offering further trekking opportunities.

Beyond primates, Virunga protects a diverse range of other wildlife, including okapis (a giraffe relative), forest elephants, lions, numerous antelope species, and a rich variety of birds. The park’s diverse habitats provide refuge for these animals, making it a crucial stronghold for conservation efforts in the region.

Visitors can engage in a variety of activities within Virunga National Park. Gorilla trekking is the most popular, but chimpanzee tracking and volcano climbing (especially Mount Nyiragongo) are also highly sought-after experiences. Guided nature walks offer opportunities to explore the park’s diverse flora and fauna, while birdwatching enthusiasts will be delighted by the abundance of avian species. Due to the park’s location in a region that has experienced periods of instability, it is essential to check current security conditions and travel advisories before planning a trip.
