More about this Park

Murchison Falls National Park, established in 1952, spans approximately 3,840 square kilometers. Its diverse ecosystems encompass savannah grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, and tropical forests, creating a rich habitat for a wide array of wildlife. The park is bisected by the Nile River, which is the park’s defining feature.

The highlight of Murchison Falls is undoubtedly the dramatic Murchison Falls themselves. Here, the Nile River is forced through a narrow gorge just seven meters wide, plunging 43 meters with a thunderous roar, creating a powerful and awe-inspiring spectacle. The spray from the falls often creates rainbows, adding to the beauty of the scene.

Game drives within the park offer excellent opportunities to spot a variety of wildlife. Lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, various antelope species, and primates like baboons and patas monkeys are commonly seen. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 450 bird species recorded, including the shoebill stork.

A boat safari along the Nile River is another must-do activity. This tranquil cruise provides close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of water birds. It also offers unique views of the falls from below. Hiking to the top of the falls offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the powerful cascade.

The nearby Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is often combined with a Murchison Falls visit, offering the chance to track rhinos on foot. This adds another dimension to the wildlife experience in the region.
