More about this Park

Kahuzi-Biega National Park encompasses a vast area of over 6,000 square kilometers, protecting a diverse range of habitats, from lowland rainforest to montane forest and bamboo forests. The park’s namesake mountains, Kahuzi and Biega, dominate the landscape, with Mount Kahuzi being the highest point at 3,308 meters. The park is divided into two sectors: the lowland sector, accessible from Bukavu, and the mountainous sector. The lowland sector is characterized by its dense rainforest and is where most gorilla tracking takes place.

The park’s most famous inhabitants are the eastern lowland gorillas ( Gorilla beringei graueri), also known as Grauer’s gorillas. These gentle giants are the largest of the gorilla subspecies and are critically endangered. Tracking these gorillas through the dense forest is a truly unforgettable experience, offering a rare opportunity to observe them in their natural environment.

Besides gorillas, Kahuzi-Biega is home to other primates, including chimpanzees, several monkey species like the owl-faced monkey and the red colobus monkey. The park also harbors populations of forest elephants, bushbucks, and a rich variety of birdlife, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Visitors can engage in various activities within the park, with gorilla tracking being the most popular. Guided hikes and nature walks are also available, allowing visitors to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the park. Bird watching enthusiasts will be delighted by the abundance of bird species present. Due to past periods of instability in the region, it is crucial to check current safety conditions and travel advisories before planning a visit. Engaging with reputable tour operators specializing in the region is highly recommended to ensure a safe and well-organized experience.
