A revitalized wildlife haven in eastern Rwanda, offers stunning savannah landscapes, diverse wildlife, and a unique safari experience. It’s the only Big Five park in Rwanda and a testament to successful conservation efforts.
Named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary, is a landscape of rolling hills, open plains, and shimmering lakes. Once heavily depleted due to poaching and cattle grazing, the park has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to a successful partnership between the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and African Parks. Today, it stands as a shining example of conservation success in Africa.
The park’s diverse habitats support a wide array of wildlife. The reintroduction of lions and black rhinos in recent years has restored the Big Five presence, making Akagera a must-visit destination for safari enthusiasts. During game drives, visitors have the chance to spot these iconic animals, along with other impressive species such as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species like impala, topi, and eland.
Lake Ihema, located in the southern part of the park, is a haven for aquatic life. Boat safaris on the lake provide excellent opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles, and a rich variety of water birds, including the iconic shoebill stork. For those seeking a more immersive experience, guided walking safaris offer a chance to explore the park on foot, accompanied by experienced guides who share their knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Bird watchers will be delighted by the park’s rich avian diversity, with over 500 recorded species. Fishing is also permitted in designated areas of Lake Ihema.
