More about this Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers approximately 331 square kilometers and is characterized by its dense, ancient rainforest, rugged terrain, and steep slopes. The park’s diverse altitudinal range, from 1,160 meters to 2,607 meters above sea level, contributes to its rich biodiversity. This variety of habitats supports a remarkable array of flora and fauna, making it a crucial conservation area. The park’s name, “Impenetrable,” reflects the dense vegetation and challenging terrain, which have helped protect its unique ecosystem for centuries.

The park’s most famous residents are the endangered mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei). Bwindi is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, making it a vital refuge for this critically endangered species. Gorilla tracking is the most popular activity in the park, offering visitors the extraordinary opportunity to spend an hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. The experience is both humbling and awe-inspiring, creating lasting memories.

Besides gorillas, Bwindi is also home to a diverse array of other primates, including chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 350 bird species, including numerous Albertine Rift endemics. Other wildlife found in Bwindi includes forest elephants, various antelope species, and a rich diversity of butterflies and insects.
