While some regions of DRC face challenges, the areas where we operate—Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks—are generally considered safe for tourism. Park authorities and security personnel maintain a presence to ensure visitor safety. We prioritize your well-being and closely monitor the situation on the ground, working with experienced local partners. However, it’s crucial to check current travel advisories from your country before traveling.
Most nationalities require a visa to enter DR Congo. We strongly recommend applying for your visa well in advance of your trip. We can provide guidance and necessary documentation to assist with the visa application process.
The most common entry point is Kigali International Airport (Rwanda). From Kigali, you can cross the border into DRC and travel to Bukavu (for Kahuzi-Biega) or Goma (for Virunga). We handle all transfers and logistics from Kigali, ensuring a seamless journey.
Mountain gorillas are found in Virunga National Park, while eastern lowland gorillas (Grauer’s gorillas) are found in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Eastern lowland gorillas are larger in size than mountain gorillas and have distinct physical characteristics
The Nyiragongo hike is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. It’s a steep climb through diverse volcanic terrain, taking approximately 5-6 hours to reach the summit. Overnight stays are in basic shelters at the top, allowing you to witness the breathtaking lava lake at night. A good level of fitness is recommended.
Besides gorillas, DR Congo’s parks are home to diverse wildlife. In Virunga, you might see chimpanzees, monkeys, and various bird species. Kahuzi-Biega also hosts chimpanzees, forest elephants, and a rich variety of birdlife.
We recommend packing lightweight, neutral-colored clothing, sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera. For gorilla trekking and volcano hikes, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts are essential. We provide a detailed packing list specific to your itinerary upon booking.
The Congolese Franc (CDF) is the official currency. US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, especially for park fees and larger transactions. It is advisable to carry US dollars in cash (small denominations are useful), as credit cards and ATMs are not readily available outside major cities.
